Work While Study

The option to work while studying is one of the decision-making criteria for prospective international students finalizing their education destination. International students enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) can work up to 20 hours per week during school terms and full-time (30+ hours/week) during scheduled breaks, such as the summer holidays. Most students don’t need a work permit to work while they study, whether their job is on-campus or off-campus.

Work on-campus:

Students can only start working in Canada when they start their study program which lists a condition that says you’re allowed to work on- or off-campus.

“On-campus” means students can work at all the buildings on their College campus. If Colleges have more than one campus, they may only work at the campus where they are studying in most cases.

Post Study Work Permit

• Students can start their new program within 150 calendar days of receiving the confirmation of previous program completion.
• Students can receive up to 1 year Work Permit if they apply for a 1 year course.
• Students can receive up to 3 year Work Permit if they apply for 2 or 4 year courses.

Possibility of Immigration

EDUCATION SYSTEM OF CANADA

Types of Institutes

K-12- Schools:

In Canada, education is free for all Canadians from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The completion of Grade 12 marks the end of secondary school, except in Quebec where students earn their secondary school diploma after Grade 11.

Universities:

There are 98 universities in Canada. They Offer traditional degree programs such as Bachelors, Masters and PhD programs along with Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma. Generally the length of bachelor degree remains for four years, master for two years and Ph. D 2 – 5 years.

Community Colleges:

There are 150 Community Colleges across Canada. They Offer Certificate, Diplomas, Post Diploma from 1 to 3 years of length and Applied Bachelor’s’ Degrees for four years as well as University Transfer programs.

Private Career Colleges:

The Colleges offer professional certificates and diplomas in various fields such as Business, Computer and I.T., Engineering, Health Science, Hospitality studies and others. The length of the programs remain from 1 to 2 years

Duration of Degrees

Undergraduate programs leading to a bachelor’s degree generally require three or four years of full-time study, depending on the province.

Master’s or Graduate Studies or Post Graduate Diploma
Master’s degrees generally require at least 2 years of full-time studies including a thesis (a long essay based on original research), practicum or research paper.

Doctoral, PhD and Doctoral programs require a minimum of 2-5 years of full-time study

These requirements apply to everyone who wishes to study in Canada, whether or not you need a study permit to study in Canada.

Academic & IELTS Requirements under (SDS)

Other than Academic requirement students need to have following

• Have proof that you have enough money to pay for your Tuition fees.
• Living expenses for yourself and any family members (spouse or common-law partner and/or dependent children) who come with you to Canada (According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada guidelines in addition to the cost of tuition fees, you will require approximately $10 000 per year to cover your living expenses. 
• Be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada,
• Satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when you have completed your study

Fall Intake in Canada:

Fall Intake is also known as September Intake. This intake includes the most number of institutes offering the largest number of seats available in all the courses, compared to the other two Intakes. Apart from that, the weather in fall is more pleasant compared to the winter.

Winter Intake in Canada:

Winter intake in Canada is also known as January Intake. This intake can be considered as the continuation of the fall intake. A fewer number of institutes offer courses in winter intake compared to the fall intake. The student has to adapt to the weather conditions as it’s very cold in the month of January in Canada.

Spring Intake in Canada:

Spring intake in Canada or summer intake in Canada is also known as May Intake.

This is the least preferred intake of all the intakes in Canada that are available. Not many colleges offer a course during the spring session, and the ones that offer are very few.

Canada SDS

Canada has launched the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program in India on 8th June 2018 to provide more eligible Indian students with the opportunity to study at a Canadian post-secondary institution and for the faster student visa application processing time. SDS (Student Direct Stream) is a student permit facilitation program which will offer faster and simpler visa processing to international students.

Student Direct Stream has minimum processing time and the SDS applications are processed within 20 calendar days. However, some applications may take longer. 

Online applications submitted electronically are eligible for SDS processing with minimum visa documents and the process is time saving.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Scholarships and awards for international students are available at some Canadian institutions for students with exceptional results. The amount and type of award varies from one institution to another. Obtaining a scholarship is competitive and applications must be made directly to each school.

Your next steps before leaving for Canada are as follows:

In your Hand bag you MUST carry:

• Original Passport as well as Original Visa Approval letter (Computer Generated Letter including UCI and Application number)
• A BioMetric Letter needs to be carried when you are going to Canada, it will be required at the airport during the Immigration Process.
• ORIGINAL OFFER LETTER from the college with DLI # along with a support letter provided by the college for Airport clearance.
• All Original academic documents and IELTS scorecard.
• Receipt of Tuition fees paid (through wire transfer from Bank) and Receipt received from the college
• GIC Certificate & Welcome Package _ need to sign
• Address and phone number of where you will be staying in Canada and also where you are going to quarantine
• Copy of the Visa Application forms filled at the time of Application for student visa for Future purpose
• Forex, about CAD $ 2500 to $ 4000 CAD by way of Demand Draft or Travelers Cheque, CAD $ 500 cash and change of cad 15 – 20 dollars for trolley @ airport 
• Health & Travel Insurance strongly recommended from India.
• Students need to send a visa copy from their email to College.
• Student need to take study permit from airport, in case of Co-op Program, Students 

are also required to take work Permit from the Airport together with a Study permit.

• Students are required to submit their Visa copy & CAQ Letter (For Quebec Province)

 to their respective college from their Register Email ID.
