You'll need to complete the following steps to register. Click on the links to learn more about each step.

• Verify you meet the Equipment and Environment Requirements.
• Start your registration with ETS to purchase your test.
• Complete your registration with ProctorU to choose a test date and time.

The test fee is the same and depends on where you plan to take the test. For more information, see TOEFL iBT Test Fees.

Test times are available Sundays through Wednesdays, 24 hours a day. Appointments may be available as early as 24 hours after you register.

We are continuing to assess the situation to determine if additional test dates will be added.

No. Test center closures are dependent on local conditions. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is offered everywhere the TOEFL iBT test is normally offered, except Mainland China and Iran, to give you another option for safe, convenient testing. But as countries begin to reopen, their test centers are reopening as well, so you may be able to take your test in a test center as scheduled.

If you have an upcoming test date, be sure to check your email and ETS account for any changes.

No. You must register, reschedule or cancel via the website.

Yes. You can request the following accommodations via your ETS account before registering for an at home test:

• extended time
• extra breaks
• screen magnification
• selectable colors

If you receive approval, you can then register via your ETS account.

For all other approved accommodations, register through ETS Disability Services.

Yes, you can use your voucher during checkout in your ETS account.

Your primary identification (ID) document should be a current, valid passport that shows your name, photograph and signature and is written in English-language letters.

If you don't have a valid passport, see ID Requirements for the TOEFL Test.

Note: ETS is temporarily accepting government-issued IDs with expiration dates from February 1, 2020, forward. All other ID policies still apply.

Yes. There's no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you can only take it once in a 3-day period.

Yes, you can reschedule free of charge through your ProctorU account any time prior to your appointment.

No. Please contact ETS to discuss your options.

Yes. To do so, contact ETS. If you cancel your appointment no later than 4 days before your test date, you'll receive a refund equivalent to half of the original test fee.

You must use a laptop or desktop computer that meets the technical requirements. You can't use a phone or tablet.

Yes, if:

• Your computer has at least Mac OS X® 10.5. Note that it is recommended you use Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra.
• You are using a Chrome™ or Firefox® browser
• The ETS Test Browser is installed.
• It passes the ProctorU Systems Check.

No. You may use an erasable marker with a small whiteboard or one blank piece of paper inside a transparency sheet during your exam. You'll be asked to erase all notes in view of the proctor at the end of the test.

• Gather the materials you'll need for your test session.
• Passport or other acceptable ID
• Acceptable note taking materials, such as a whiteboard or plastic transparency sheet
• Cellphone or hand-held mirror for check-in
• Remove all other items from the area.
• Make sure the area meets all environment requirements.

This video offers a closer look at how to prepare your testing area, the check-in process and what you should expect during your at home test. The check-in process takes approximately 20 minutes.

Yes. A human proctor will connect with you during check-in, verify your ID and monitor you throughout the entire session to make sure you're following all testing procedures. The proctor may be male or female.

You will also be monitored by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help ensure test security.

If you need to contact the proctor during your test, speak to get their attention or use the LogMeIn chat function. It may take 30–60 seconds for the proctor to reply. If the proctor is attempting to chat with you, the chat icon (a blue owl) will bounce up and down.

Your photo will be taken at the beginning of your test and included on your score report as part of your record to the institutions you designated to receive your scores.

Yes, you will be recorded during your entire test session.

Yes, there is a 10-minute break after the Listening section, during which you may leave your seat. Be sure to return on time, or your test may be terminated by the proctor.

Unscheduled breaks during the test aren't allowed, and will result in the termination of your test.

At the end of the test, you'll see your unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections. Then you'll be given the option to report or cancel your scores.

No. You must use internal or external computer speakers.

You must resolve all issues (shown in red) and pass the systems check prior to checking in for your test. If you can't resolve the issues yourself, contact ProctorU using the contact form at the bottom of the systems check page. Live Help Desk Technicians are available to assist you.

Note: You must resolve all issues before your test appointment, or you won't be able to test.

• Run the ProctorU Systems Check at the time of day you plan to test to make sure you don't have any bandwidth issues.
• Run a final systems check shortly before your test session starts.
• Close all browsers and applications not needed for the test. This can help prevent bandwidth issues while you test.
• Make sure any other devices in your household that use internet are not running.

If you have technical issues immediately before your test, contact ProctorU via the Live Chat feature in your ProctorU account.

This won't affect the amount of time you have to complete the test. The timer for your test doesn't begin until the proctor enters the password.

If you have a technical issue during your test that prohibits you from speaking to the proctor, notify the proctor via the LogMeIn chat function. The chat icon (a blue owl) can be found on the task bar for a PC and on the menu bar for Mac.

If you lose your internet connection momentarily, you'll automatically be reconnected to the proctor when your connection is restored. If your exam can be reopened, your proctor will do so for you.

If you aren't able to reconnect and speak to the proctor via the LogMeIn chat function, call ProctorU at +1-855-772-8678 for assistance.

Yes. Because this is still a TOEFL iBT test, the scoring criteria, scoring process and score scale are exactly the same as a test taken at a test center. Scores can be accepted and used in the same way as the test center version.

Unofficial Scores: At the end of your test, you will see your unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections on the screen.

Electronic Score Reporting: Your official scores will be available in your ETS account online or via the TOEFL Official App, approximately 6–10 days after you take the test.

Paper Score Reporting: If you requested a paper copy of your score report before you took the test, it will be mailed within 11 days after your test date. Delivery times will vary based on local postal services.

Yes. The Test Center field on the score report will indicate Special Home Edition.

As with a test at a test center, you can send your scores to as many as 4 institutions or agencies at no additional cost. You'll select your free score recipients in your ETS account when you begin your registration.

Because this is still a TOEFL iBT test, scores can be accepted and used in the same way as the test center version, and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the use of Special Home Edition scores from thousands of universities worldwide. See a list of some of the institutions around the world that have specifically listed the Special Home Edition as a testing option. If you have any doubts about whether an institution accepts Special Home Edition scores, check the institution’s website, or contact them directly.

Before you choose an at home English proficiency test, make sure it meets the quality and security standards required for acceptance by the universities to which you'll apply. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition:

• is identical in content, format, on-screen experience and scoring to the trusted TOEFL iBT test taken at a test center
• has a strong level of security comparable to the TOEFL iBT test taken in a test center because there are live, remote proctors for real-time human monitoring, in addition to best-in-class AI technology

As a result, universities can be confident in the scores they receive from the home edition of the TOEFL iBT test. Other tests offered at home without these security features may or may not be accepted by institutions.
